What’s in my Author Survival Kit?

survival kit

Writing books takes more than a computer and a plot outline. A lot more. Today I’m sharing some of the items I must have around me to write my books and make it through a long day of drafting or revising. Do you write? Are you often stuck at home with big, long-term projects? Maybe some of my author survival must-haves are on your list too . . .

  1. Hot Drinks

This is number one in my survival kit for a reason: I can’t make words into books without coffee. Never. Not gonna happen. I try to stick to 2-3 cups per day, but instead of that third cup of coffee, I love switching over to tea. Have you tried any of the teas from London based, Fortum and Mason? These are some of my favorites and readily available online here.

2. Notebooks

These useful books are perfect for catching stray ideas, jotting down plot bunnies when I’m not at my computer, and also writing random dialogue lines or other book elements. I often start building my characters in notebooks. What are their physical traits or emotional triggers? What about quirks and their favorite foods or hobbies? I usually designate one notebook per novel and never get rid of them.

3. Must Stay Warm

I treasure this log cabin quilt my mother made for me, years ago. Hidden in here are scraps from dresses she used to sew for me when I was little. The back side is lined in cozy flannel. Almost my entire sophomore novel was written under this quilt.

4. Fun Socks

Notice any themes here? Any other Ravenclaws in the house?

5. Muse

Mine happens to be a miniature schnauzer named Rocco. He is ever so helpful.

6. Other Books (lots)

One of the biggest parts of being a writer is being an avid reader. Here are a few of my newest deliveries! Some beauties in this pile. Ask me all about my favorites . . .

7. Snacks

I try to keep things pretty healthful. Yogurt with fruit, avocado toast, and guacamole are some of my top picks. (Notice a trend here?)

9. Hydrate

I can’t drink coffee and tea all day, so plenty of water is a must. I’m lucky to have a lemon tree in my backyard.

10. Something Pretty

I love a candle. Some of my favorites, like this large Capri Blue candle, come from Anthropologie.

That’s about it! What do you need near to do your best work?
