Instead of a New Years Resolution, try a 2017 theme word
Teens, have you or your parents, friends, or coaches made New Years resolutions before? What usually happens with these resolutions? Hmmmm, in our experience what happens is that we start off the year all motivated and ready to change. Ready to smash that resolution. And that lasts about, oh, two months?
Do any of these popular goals look familiar?
- I’m going to exercise more
- I’m going to eat healthier
- I’m going to study harder
- I’m going to get involved in more activities
All of these are awesome, and worthwhile. But specific statements like these can limit us. Sometimes they can become stale and boring after a while.
We have another idea: The Yearly Theme Word
The yearly theme word is one inspirational or motivational word you choose that will become the theme of your year. Theme words can trap many parts of your life and, we think, they are more impactful than just simple resolution statements.
How to find your theme word? Consider one of more of these:
- What’s important to you?
- What makes your heart happy?
- What do you need?
- What can you share?
- What is special about you?
Here are some examples of theme words and what they might look like day to day.
I’m going to try to not be negative about new things. I’m going to plan and look forward to the amazing things in store for me in the new year. I’m going to beat fear with love and courage.
I’m going to walk more places, take the stairs, and try to do something physical everyday. I’m going to try to eat healthful foods 80 percent of the time and enjoy splurges, too. I’ll try playing a new sport or join a team.
I’m going to donate my time, extra money, and talents to help others. I’m going to try to impact the world one person at a time. I can purchase coffee for someone at Starbucks. I can assist my parents around the house, help friends with a study skill I rock at, and volunteer my time.
I’m going to put my all into my studies. I’m going to read more and maybe take lessons to learn a new sport or musical instrument.
I’m going to expand my social network and become more available to the friends I already have. I can pay special attention to the special needs of my friends and help meet them. I can plan simple, special events to get my friends together.
I’m going to be more curious. I’ll make a list of all the places in the world I’d love to visit and begin learning about them. I’ll dream big! I’m going to try to learn about and explore special things about the city I live in. I’m going to try new foods or maybe learn a new language.
Think of your word as a new outfit. Try it on for size, move around in it a little…and go!
Okay, who’s in? If any Chronicles readers come up with a 2017 theme word, we’d love to know it. Happy year!
