Lately we’re loving…Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream from Freeze, San Diego
It’s been pretty hot around San Diego this week. The Chronicles Crew decided to pile into the car and check out a place that just opened a few days ago. We’ve been wanting to try out liquid nitrogen ice cream but hadn’t found the right place, yet. We’re happy to report that we’ve found the right place and it’s fantastic.
Why Freeze? Have a look at the menu. No boring strawberry or vanilla to be found, here. These flavors are fun, whimsical, unique and we knew we had to check it out.
If you haven’t had liquid nitrogen ice cream, here are the basics. Instead of using a conventional ice cream freezer, liquid nitrogen ice cream is made to order, right in front of you.

You get to watch as employees combine fresh ingredients into mixers. Then the mixture is flash frozen with the nitrogen. The fun part? A dry-ice explosion that fills the shop.
The employees at Freeze are friendly, welcoming, and excited for you to love their product as much as they do. Visitors can get close to the action while they create their sweet treats like ice cream chemists.
Now, the flavors. Oh my goodness, the flavors. When Freeze hosted the Chronicles Crew, we tried some of their most popular choices.

Kate was most excited to try this flavor. We thought it would be really sweet but it was perfect. Think sweet cream ice cream with a hint of sea salt (get it?) On top, our server added Pecan Sandies. Get it in the optional purple cone and you have a treat fit for any fun-loving person, big or small.

I didn’t try this one but Alec gave it a definite thumbs-up. He also ate very last bite. And who doesn’t like Nutella?

The crew at Freeze made sure we tried their most unique flavor, Black Magic. This is a Harry Potter inspired creation, flavored with Butterbeer soda, and dusted with butterscotch morsels. What makes it black? They use activated charcoal, which is actually a natural detox agent and very good for you. Activated charcoal is used to whiten teeth, but warning…if you eat the entire Black Magic your teeth might look a little gray for a bit. Is it worth it? Absolutely. This is the most unique ice cream flavor we’ve ever tried. We had ours in a cup but this flavor is paired with a black, dark chocolate waffle cone. We just returned from the Harry Potter World at Universal Orlando. This brought back memories.
If you live in San Diego, don’t miss Freeze. If you’re planning to visit, put this place on your foodie to-do list. Prices start at $5.50 for a single scoop. Don’t let the word single fool you. Their smallest size is huge and definitely sharable. If you go, let us know how you liked it. That’s all for now, we’ve happily ruined our dinner.
