We must be on a fantasy kick, lately! Last time it was the Storm Siren series, by Mary Weber. Today, we’re reviewing the very popular Orphan Queen duology by Jodi Meadows.
In The Orphan Queen, Wilhemina Korte wants one thing very badly: to reclaim her kingdom of Aecor and become the rightful queen. When Aecor was overtaken by the rival Indigo Kingdom years ago, young Wil became an orphan and joined in with other sons and daughters who were also spared. This group of shattered orphans banded together and called themselves the Ospreys.
Wil, and one of her fellow orphans, Melanie, come up with a plan to impersonate displaced noble women in order to infiltrate Skyvale palace in the new Indigo kingdom. Wil embarks on a risky scheme to gather enough intel and information to take back what is hers. During her stay in the palace, she becomes close to the Indigo prince, Tobiah, the boy who was the reason for her kingdom’s takeover.
Complications arise– Wilhemina’s illegal use of her magical abilities makes her a constant target. The strange wraith mist that arises with magic use, leaving deadly, mutated people and animals in its wake. Add in a mysterious vigilante named Black Knife, who seems to thwart Wil’s movements at every turn. Until, they begin working together.
