Book Review: The Remnant Chronicles, Book 1

Remnant Chronicles

Book 1 of The Remnant Chronicles, The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson

We couldn’t wait to finish the first book of The Remnant Chronicles so we could review it and recommend it to you. This YA fantasy is truly a cut-above many fantasy series offerings we’ve read. It’s that good.

Book one of the Remnant Chronicles opens in the mythical kingdom of Morrighan. Princes and First Daughter, Lia, is getting ready to meet a fate she deems just a hair above dying itself: an arranged marriage to a prince from neighboring kingdom, Dalbreck. A prince she thinks is ugly, old, and possibly cruel. A man she’s never met.

Lia won’t have it. She and her ladies’ maid and faithful friend, Pauline, devise an elaborate plan on the morning of Lia’s dreaded wedding. They manage to escape and begin a new life in the seaside village of Terravin. Just as Lia settles, two mysterious men named Rafe and Kaden arrive and board at the inn where Lia works. She doesn’t realize, but one man has been sent to assassinate her. The other is none other than the jilted Prince of Dalbreck. Lia’s life intertwines with these men, as she inadvertently unlocks precious kingdom secrets, exposes ages worth of tyranny, and dares to falls in love.

Mary E. Pearson crafted a flawless story. Lia is headstrong and stubborn but not annoying and whiny. The reader feels for her and pulls for her to achieve the true love and freedom she desires so greatly. We loved the storytelling and point of view. As the story flows, the author switches POV between Lia and each of the mysterious men. Rafe and Kaden are rich and complex and their interactions with Lia as the story moves along are unexpected.

The story is told with perfect pacing and features plenty of jaw-dropping moments. We love  stories where we truly get sucked in and never want to leave. If you love fantasy, or just great storytelling, don’t miss book one of The Remnant Chronicles.
